The Russian Foreign Office has demanded the immediate release of 12 Orthodox nuns, who have been kidnapped from a Christian village of Maaloula near Damascus.
This came today in a statement by Russia’s human rights ombudsman Konstantin Dolgov.
He called on international community to condemn the abduction. According to some reports, the nuns were kidnapped during the night from the Orthodox Monastery of Santa Tecla in Maaloula and taken to Yabrud.
The rebels abducted 12 Syrian and Lebanese Orthodox nuns from their convent after moving into the Christian historic town. Syrian television said rebels had entered the Santa Tecla convent in the centre of the city. The monastery had 40 nuns and orphans.
