The Russian Foreign Office has demanded the immediate release of 12 Orthodox nuns, who have been kidnapped from a Christian village of Maaloula near Damascus.

This came today in a statement by Russia’s human rights ombudsman Konstantin Dolgov.

“We are calling on those behind the kidnapping to release the nuns at once and return them unscathered,” the diplomat tweeted on Wednesday.

He called on international community to condemn the abduction. According to some reports, the nuns were kidnapped during the night from the Orthodox Monastery of Santa Tecla in Maaloula and taken to Yabrud.
