Ebola Sierra Leone: Fake Ebola Results For Burial Bribes

Reports have it that a certain family bribed it way to acquire an ebola-free medical result in their desperation to give a befitting burial to their death relative. Unsuspecting members of the Muslim Jamat in the said community took charge of the corpse to perform all religious rites including bathing of the corpse prior to escorting it for burial.

There are reports from across the country that certain health officials including lab technicians and members of the burial team are involved in activities inimical to the fight against the deadly Ebola virus, thereby putting more lives at risk in the middle of the deadly ebola outbreak.

These health workers stand accused of exchanging lab results for money as low as five hundred thousand leones and as high as one million leones. Members of the burial team are also being seriously and frequently accused of receiving similar amounts of money to hand over corpses of people confirmed to be Ebola positive to their relatives for burial.

These allegations could not be far from the truth as evident in the rise in number of ebola deaths in quarantined homes, areas and those participating in burying their loved ones.

The latest of a possible event of the issuance of fake ebola result is the rising death toll in Aberdeen village in Freetown.

While several community members are currently at risk of already contracting the deadly virus, some are already dying.

This is a very unfortunate and catastrophic scenario unfolding in the country right now, with the urgent need for authorities concerned to monitor, take action and reverse the deadly trend.

In today’s Ariogbo Gossip series, the fictitious Ariogbo will critically look into that issue.

ARIOGBO: Hello humans and devils in the land that we all claim to love. Of course we all know that we are just pronouncing fake love for the motherland. Evidently, humans are just engaged in things that are contrary to productiveness, godliness, and national development.

All they are busy doing is to selfishly enrich themselves even at the expense of the country. If my ancestors even tell me that they imported this ebola to Sierra Leone to make money, I would not be surprised. Look at what is happening now. Such wickedness and ungodliness will never happen in our kingdom. First it was a lab technician in Kenema that was found wanton for exchanging ebola positive results to negative for as low as twenty five thousand leones. Could you imagine how cheap and reckless human beings can be? If that happens in our kingdom, we will just bundle that Ariogbo, alongside the rest of his family and throw them into a lake a fire in the middle of an evil forest. Oh yes! The punishment should be commensurate with the crime. But humans will shout human rights. Human rights foot! Well, human rights will not only continue to lead your ‘tranga yase’ children astray but human rights is now killing you. The human government needs to be very tough if only they are serious about winning this ebola fight. They will only be able to overcome ebola to accepting and implementing strategies and laws that are tantamount to discomforting humans. But in fact sef, the government is also acting suspiciously. So who will save the people?

‘Na tranga yeas dae men tranga yeas ebola’. I almost got drifted from the topic on floor. Let me continue with these health officials that are killing innocent citizens out of greed. Yes, ‘ar dae talk gbet’. But before I talk about their excesses, let me start by giving them thumps up for being at the forefront in this deadly war. Yes, I don’t want to be ungrateful. I am not like humans. But let me just warn these health workers that they stand the risk of reversing their own very gains if the trend of exchanging ebola results for money continues. ‘Tell fren true nor pwel fren’. How can you be so inhuman and wicked and un-ariogbo-like by giving an ebola negative result to a person that is ebola positive or died out of ebola? What is the rationale for that? And why must members of the burial team receive bribes from relatives of people that died out of ebola to hand over the corpses to these relatives for burial? If the health workers could do the aforementioned, then it is possible that they are also dishing out ebola positive results to humans that are ebola free.

But humans ‘sef’, how can they go to the extent of bribing to take possession of the corpses of their dead loved ones? What are they trying to achieve? Honestly, that does not make any sense to us the Ariogbos. We will understand the reality that humans will want to pay last respect to their dead relatives; no qualms about that? But we the Ariogbos will prioritize the welfare and continued existence of the living to the dead. There is no sense in giving befitting burial to the dead at the expense of the lives of dozens if not hundreds of others.

At a time like this, humans should focus on praying for their dead relatives than giving them befitting burials. Let the dead bury their dead…that is what we the Ariogbos believe in. To be forewarned is to forearmed. ‘Ar dae speak gbet’. Maybe you will understand me better.

But wait oh! Would be health workers have justification for what they are doing? They may want to argue that they are doing this because they are not receiving their salaries and allowances on time. But is that why they should endanger more lives? Humans are sick; humans are inhuman; humans are wicked. Let me return to my ancestors for further consultations.
